Week in Review

This week saw a rise in new members, welcome all.

Robin Brooke appears to have been the topic of discussion for this week. While PT11 ended her opening thread with the statement “Stupid lil bitches..and a dirty old bastard, not a good combo.” It appears that this is exactly what is required for a popular thread on Tartarus! But as quickly as the thread rose to the top, it also fell.

Again threads around crime and justice seem to invoke discussion. The topic around smoke-free prisons was obviously popular, though without most of the controversy perpetuated by the media.

The confessions thread remains the most popular and a number of other items appear to becoming recurring topics.

For those of you who like statistics, here is the current tally of figures we are able to keep track of:

  • Active registered members: 63
  • Average unique visitors per day: 100  (The first time a person visits a site per day)
  • Average visits per day: 269 (A new visit is when a persons session data has cleared)
  • Total unique vistors: 566 (The first time a person has visited the site)
  • Totals visits: 4,364
  • Page views: 80,362 (Total of every page refresh)
  • Posts per day: 322
  • New topics per day: 13
  • Total topics: 222
  • Total posts: 5492

Further Features

Implemented this week was a word filter. This is a personal way of censoring words you may not want to see. You can also choose how these words are displayed, whether just starred out or changed to words you feel more suitable. Hopefully that makes this site just a little bit more safe for work for those that need it.

Changes were made to the HTML in the menus and hopefully that has fixed any of the problems that there were. We are responsive to feedback so please let us know if something is still working incorrectly.

Like Tartarus on facebook if you want to share the site with your friends!

Finally, as some of you may be aware we have a system in place for adding badges to a members profile. Currently the only badge that is displayed is the First Day badge for those members who registered on the first day the new domain was made public. If you have any suggestions for badges speak up in the forum. Ideas don’t make themselves.

Thank you for a great week!

Hello all.

Well we’ve been operational now for a week and I would like to thank all of you for making it a great one. The first week saw over 50 users join, 2000 visits and over 41,000 page views. The response has been far better than expected. During the week we sneakily added a new feature that allows you to “like” a post on our forums on Facebook. This is a great way to share a thread you like with other people. We’ve also fixed a few of the bugs that were mentioned such as the menu problems in Internet Explorer and problems with smilies posting properly. If you notice anything annoying or have an idea for a new feature, do tell us, we’re listening.

Week In Review

This is a new aspect of the site we plan to try keep happening. The best posts/ threads that are noticed may get mentioned especially if there are some great quotes!

The first week saw discussions about Crime tagged the most. These weren’t necessarily the most popular discussions however with the Confessions thread ruling supreme.  Also popular were the quirks and food threads. While most of the discussions seem relatively light hearted there are hints of some serious discussions and debates occurring in the future.

If there are any excellent posts made, post them in the Quote of the Day thread. Each week we will skim posts from this thread as nominations for the best weekly post. The best weekly post may be included in the weekly review (with suitable context)

Post Away!

Hello world!

Hi! Welcome to the new Tartarus. Believe it or not this has been in preparation for a few months now.

We decided that having a little, ugly, forum hosted on a free site wasn’t quite what we wanted any more. Sadly we’re going to lose all our old forum posts. There was no way of backing up the old data and bringing it in here.

This also means everyone is going to re-register.

This is the second generation of Tartarus. When Tartarus first began it was a hosted for free like so many other forums of its kind. We the admins felt that Tartarus had outgrown this and that there was more to be achieved.

The After Effect:

With our new vision for the future of Tartarus came what we now call the after effect. This pays homage to our previous incarnation. It is an allusion to the events and issues that caused us to feel the need to take Tartarus further.

Our forums are about light and logical moderation. We believe in transparency and openness. Ideas like freedom of information tend to resonate with us. Many of us are members on other forums where we believe that the standard of moderation doesn’t fit the needs of our discussions.

With Tartarus: The After Effect comes our domain, Tartarus.co.nz. It points to our front page and we hope to use this occasionally to summarise lively topics. We also have a few other plans up our sleeves for the future.

Because we have just set everything up there might be a few rough edges. Please let us know if you find anything you think is a bug or is misbehaving. Just post it away in the forum and I’m sure it will grab someone’s attention. Also let us know if you think there are any things we need to improve. We have a lot more power to improve things and implement new features than we used to. If you pay careful attention we have actually implemented all of the features that were requested in the previous forums.

We’ve tried to make the theme and colour combinations easy on the eye while still being reasonably exciting. We’ve removed colour while trying to give the appearance of having more colour. We wanted something that was pragmatic and encouraged posting.

We have updated the smilies we use. This is a brand new set, combining different styles and memes.

We have created a few different categories to sort our topics out. These still appear on the main forum page together however. This is more to help generate a wide range of discussion than divide the information displayed.

The Future

We will always be looking to improve when ever we have time. We expect there to be bugs and are happy to be given criticism where we aren’t up to standard. Many of the changes from the free forum hosting to the after effect were a direct result of analysing the requests of our members.

In the pipeline we have plans to create a layout of the threads and topics in such a way that they can be viewed from a cellphone in a much easier way. It may take a while and it isn’t exactly a feature with the highest demand but we think it would add something of value to our site.

We will always be thinking of ways to improve.

Post away.
